5 Tips for Making the Most Out of Mardi Gras Parade

5 Tips for Making the Most Out of Mardi Gras Parade
Jason Lie|

Do you remember what happened last year? The hot glued costume you made the night before, getting lost in a sea of dancing bodies. Of course, you looked amazing, and of course, you had a good time, but you can make this year’s Mardi Gras easier with a little planning.

If this is going to be your first time, let’s answer a simple question.

What is Mardi Gras?

Sydney’s Mardi Gras is a two-week festival celebrating the lives, culture, community and creativity of LGBQTI people. It reaches its climax during the Mardi Gras Parade where thousands of people line the 1.7km route. First to lead the charge this year is the First Nations float, representing the traditional owners of the land. Following them are floats from various community groups, reminding us of our diversity and the need to support all LGBQTI people. This spirit of protest began with the 78ers who organised and fought for the first Sydney march.

Now that we know what Mardi Gras is, here are something you can do before, during and after the parade:

1. Get together with a drinking board game

Pre-gaming is an age-old party tradition that lifts the mood and brings the gang together. The beauty queens camp in the bathroom with their makeup. Catchy pop anthems blast from speakers, loosening the hips of your stiffest guest.

The chaos is beautiful, but if it’s going feel like a party, then everyone needs to come together. Be the hero no one deserves but needs with the 51 Most Popular Drinking Games Set. You can challenge the loud mouth to a game of Beer Pong, or reveal people’s shameful secrets with a game of ‘I Never.’ For your convenience, cards, dice and other props are included for the many other party games.

2. Dress up for the parade in lingerie or costumes

Dressing up as if you’re marching makes the experience more enjoyable, so wear whatever you want. In a crowd of statuesque drag queens, BDSM punks and unicorns, you’ll feel hardly out of place. Let these outfit ideas inspire you:

Prowling Vixen – Bodystockings

Wearing lingerie is a party itself, so why not take it to the party? For a dominatrix-inspired look, slip into a curve-hugging bodystocking. Style with a spanker or whip to complete the BDSM fantasy.

Borat Clones – Sexy Men’s Underwear

A few dollar store moustaches, wigs, and slingshot underwear will transform you and your friends into comedy legend Borat.

3. Throw a live streaming party with penis decorations

Throw your own Mardi Gras in the lavish comfort of your house. SBS will be live streaming the parade on SBS demand, SBS Australia and SBS Facebook. With entertainment handled, all you have to do it making everything pretty.

Blow up penis balloons for an inviting atmosphere…

Give out drinks with penis straws and penis ice block...

Drab your guest with tiaras and feather boas

Hand out pecker whistles to celebrate gag-worthy floats…

Viewing the parade from home is a great alternative for those who are sensitive to the weather or feel anxious in crowds.

4. Find an afterparty with your on-the-go sex toys

Can’t keep those dancing feet still? You’ll be relieved to know that nightclubs and bars open for post-parade celebrations.

Echo Silicone Pink Rabbit Tail Plug

If you’re a bit of an exhibitionist, attend a nude or underwear party wearing your animal tail butt plug. For those who venture into sex on-premise venues, carry a mini vibrator with you. The rumbling vibrations offer a unique surprise found nowhere else in the pleasure chambers.

5. Host a sex party with your dream people and toys

LGBQTI people from across Australia and overseas travel to Sydney for Mardi Gras. This rarely happens so take full advantage of it by hosting your own sex party.

First, provide your guest with the essentials such as waterbased lubeoptional condoms, and sex toy cleaner. Then, choose your sex toys depending on who you invite. Dongs and double ended dildos will keep everyone entertained. If you're in a room of hungry tops, blindfold a piggy bottom for anonymous group sex. Consider leaving the door open for surprise guests.

Final bit of advice...

While Mardi Gras is a chance for you to celebrate your sexuality, your safety is also important. Plan your transportation to and from the event. Keep water and snacks on you, and for any emergencies, note the location of toilets and other facilities. Finally, cancel your Sunday plans, you probably need the time to rest.
